Our next adventure.
We're taking the train up to Fairbanks on Saturday (a 12-hour ride through some spectacular scenery) and will be there at the finish line of the Yukon Quest, the other 1000-mile sled dog race which runs from Whitehorse, YT, to Fairbanks. We won't be there for all the finishers, I don't think, but at least will catch some front-runners. The train ride will be great. They have those dome cars for the views, plus there are platforms between the cars if you want to get outside. The very good news is that Fairbanks has warmed up from -45 last week to a very comfortable +20-something while we're there. The bad news is that it will probably be too cloudy for auroras, but I'm sure we'll be up at 2 a.m. every morning to check anyway. We'll fly back on Wednesday.
My Iditarod photos this year will just be from the ceremonial start here in Anchorage. The Trail Committee has moved the restart from Willow to Fairbanks due to lack of snow, only the second time in race history, and we will not be going out to Nome, so I'm glad we made this plan to coordinate our train ride with the finish of the Quest. Our hotel is right on the Chena River at the finish line.
