Jim's cousin, who he hadn't seen in over 40 years, came up last week with his lady friend for a five-day visit. We had to do the speed tours since we had so little time, but the weather was beautiful, and we had a ton of fun.
This is the beach at Seward on Tuesday.
The jellyfish come ashore around here in the fall. There were dozens in the shallow water.

Wednesday we went up to Talkeetna. On the way, we stopped to photograph this dog team that was training by the side of the highway.
First-timers - The Susitna River in Talkeetna, Foraker, Hunter and Denali in the background. We couldn't believe our luck that we got such clear weather.

The scenery is wonderful too...

I recall hearing a story on NPR awhile back about Native American Spirit Houses in a Russian Orthodox graveyard - this must be the place!
One of the books I'm reading right now is "Into the Wild", so my curiousity about Alaska has been piqued. I don't think I'll try to drive there, though!

(46,436 posts)Chris McCandless is kind of a controversial figure here. A lot of old-time Alaskans don't have much sympathy for him (kind of like Timothy Treadwell, the grizzly man), but others see him as kind of a romantic figure. I think he was just naive and didn't fully understand the dangers he would be presented with. Excellent book, though, in any event.
