So I just wanted to do a quick report on my recent print I had done at AdoramaPix.
A quick background, I had a photo chosen to be in a gallery show this upcoming January/February at a local community college (I'm slightly stoked about this). I first had the 12x18 print done at Costco and I was pleased with the quality. However, I got to thinking about the fact that this is a gallery show and maybe I should try a more reputable printer. I looked at Bay Photo, I looked at White House Custom Colour (and I'm still going to try their services) and I looked at another service whose name I can't recall at the moment. All of their prices seemed double that of Adorama's. So, being the cheapskate that I am, I decide to give Adorama a go thinking they must have something going on, right?
I ordered a 12x18 Metallic print mounted on single-weight board for a total of $15.33 (plus $7 for shipping) and a far cry from the $2.99 I paid at Costco. That said, I'm glad I decided to go with Adorama. The print is gorgeous. The blacks are blacker, the colors are richer and it shimmers--a side effect of the metallic print. All in all, I won't be embarrassed to hang this in a gallery (I wouldn't have been embarrassed to hang the other print either but now that I see the difference I won't look like a total rank amateur either).
I'll continue to use Costco when I want prints of my photos for the house. I don't see the need to get them professionally printed and mounted just for me to look at. And when I try WHCC, I'll report back on that too.
Finally, I recommend every now and again, printing your digital photos and hanging them in your home (if you don't already). If it was nice enough for you to take a photo of, it's nice enough to look at in your home, IMO.
BTW, this is the photo that was chosen for the show.

(22,380 posts)first for being chosen and then for the choice.
It is riveting to look at and warrants a number of viewings. I can visualize the metallic shimmer, and I think that would be quite perfect.
Congratulations!

(4,483 posts)That you had a good experience with Adoramapix, although I didn't doubt they would do a great job.
I use their metallic paper quite a bit and I can see how your shot would work well with it. Just wait till you get an email for one of their periodic sales, usually 40-50% of their already pretty great pricing, I usually wait till they have them for their prepaid and lock in the pricing.

(38,958 posts)I was looking around for options on developing. Very impressed!
Did a side by side comparison of an 8x10 portrait that was to be a Christmas gift (didn't work out too well for that)
Walgreens - frustrating (not produced on time and cropped the top subject's head off in first attempt), cheap and image was very dark
Local Camera Store - frustrating (email at 1:27 am Monday Morning telling me photo was complete only to find at 2pm it wasn't at the store to pick-up since their delivery doesn't arrive until 4pm), expensive & image was brighter but, blurred (did the 8x10 but noted on the production documentation that the photo was not of high enough resolution to actually come out good), so my local camera "experts" wasted my time and $4.32 (Thanks Guys I won't be back).
AdoramaPix - easy, reasonably priced and would not produce the image at 8x10 only offered 5x7 with sharp results of subject.

(4,483 posts)Software to upsize your photos, I use Perfect Resize, then you won't run into those file size limitations when you print.
