Years ago had Nikon, which I used most for babies and vacations. That old camera is long gone, and haven't taken pictures but for disposables for years. NOW, with lovely home by the river, I'd like an easy, light-weight camera I can use to post pics here, on FB, send to friends/family easily, for new chapter! Don't understand the technology of much, so would appreciate your suggestions.
Thanks

(68,644 posts)I still have my old Nikon FM bodies and lenses.
Now I have a Nikon Coolpix waterproof digital camera that I got at Target for under $200.
It's worked very well, even underwater while snorkeling.
My two biggest pieces of advice, having something that uses AA batteries and not special batteries specific to the camera, and an easy to use interface.
Other things to look for are optical zoom range, macro capability, and video.
Buy a large SD card, like 16 Gig or bigger.
Have fun!

DON'T understand the 'interface' business, which I suspect is important. And what's an SD card???
(Don't know where old Nikon body or lenses are. :sad

(68,644 posts)Mostly where is the flash setting and resolution setting button.
Like cell phones, some are simple and others are confounding!
I like the Nikon for it's interface, but I did have to read the first few pages.
The SD card is a removable memory card that stores all your pictures! You can have extra cards if you go on an extended vacation or just buy a high capacity card.
An 8 Gig card would hold 800 high resolution (10 megapixel) pictures. That's a lot! And 10 megapixel is the hi-res setting for this camera.
This pic is about 4x actual size:

It's just under $100. http://www.target.com/p/nikon-coolpix-s30-waterproof-camera-bundle-with-case-and-floating-wrist-strap/-/A-14310316?ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001&AFID=Google_PLA_df&LNM=|14282108&CPNG=Electronics&kpid=14282108&LID=PA&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=14282108&gclid=COfzjqOauLgCFcd_QgodLjcAOA

(131,056 posts)How do I get the pics to DU/FB/daughter???
NYC_SKP
(68,644 posts)At least FB and daughter would be because it's all there in one device.
With the nikon, you'd have to connect camera to computer, or take out the SD card and download the images.
It's extra steps, I usually use my phone.
BUT, your question sent me to the internet to see if they make a WiFi Digital Camera.... And they DO!
These, apparently, will send the pictures wirelessly to your computer!
Starting at under $100: http://www.samsung.com/us/photography/digital-cameras/EC-ST150FBPRUS
If you're near a WiFi hotspot you can post directly to the Internet!!!

Wow!
Now find one that takes AA batteries.

(131,056 posts)have simple cell, with which I take and send VERY simple pics.
Doesn't sound that removing SD card would be a problem.
WiFi digital camera sounds OK too, and home will have the hotspot, from what I can tell from landlord and tenants. Its what they use for their computers. Said they have a good 'hotspot' mechanism, and daughter, who lives nearby, said she'd help me get a good one. (Hers isn't so good.)

(15,812 posts)Congrats.
I don't currently have a pocket camera, so I can't recommend a specific one. When I need a new camera, I check the place with the most customer reviews, and that place is Amazon. Go check out the Amazon reviews for various pocket cameras. Some of them are quite good, and probably have more features than you even need. Do pay attention to zoom if you want to take photos of birds that you will inevitably see.
It is easy to take camera cards out and transfer the photos to your computer. That is what I do. But there are ways to directly transfer photos from the camera to your computer (the camera includes that). Personally I prefer just taking the camera card out because I seem to have more control over folders that way. You can then upload them to Facebook from your computer if you like. It is pretty intuitive. To post at DU you will have to get a free Photobucket account, and then post the direct link to the photo. Photobucket makes it easy because there is a special line showing you the link.
Have fun with it! I started out with a pocket camera! It was a great little Kodak but soon after that Kodak deteriorated in quality. I lost that camera in the sand at the beach.

I loved my Canon Powershot (photos and videos) and now my small camera is an Olympus Tough... go to Best Buy (or some such store) and hold them and ask questions... can't go wrong...

(90,779 posts)I like Panasonic Lumix for a point and shoot camera. Wide selection. Easy to use. Can create great photos.
I did these with an older version. (Panasonic DMZ-ZS7)
