Comment thread for the February photo contest.

Please post all comments for "I see Music" in this thread.

There is a separate thread pinned at the top for submissions only.

I'm sure DUers love to hear comments on their submissions. If not, they'll learn.

It'll also be a great place to show off the ones that weren't submitted;

Thank you,

I had a lot of fun with this month's contest; it got me into some of my archive stuff that I hadn't seen in some time, as well as shooting specifically for the theme...

The first submission is in; and I lol'd as it is eerily similar to one of the photographs I am contemplating submitting.

Thanks for hosting, Johnny! I'm sure it will be another great contest!

I was truly at my wits end. I love the theme but couldn't find my muse, so to speak. I know that sounds silly but it was important to me to get a photo for this theme.

Where was your photo taken?

The gentleman looks enraptured. They both do. Just lost in the music. I like the feel of it.

This man was to the right of the man whose photo I submitted, at Preservation Hall in NOLA

I posted an archive photo a year and a half old because it is one of my favorites I ever took. I felt I owed it to the man that I submit this photo simply because I have always felt he saw the music in front of my very eyes.

The above photo was taken in front of this mural. This mural was done by an artist collective that does commissions around the world. They did another larger one in town.

And across the street from this gourmet donut shop.

One more by the artist collective.

Soup Perkins Alley.

Soup Perkins

Source
James "Soup" Perkins was a jockey who began racing at age 11 at a northern Kentucky race track situated in Latonia (near Covington and Newport) [*]. In 1895, he rode Halma to a win in the Kentucky Derby. After the race, the 90-pound African-American was asked his age; he replied, "going on sixteen." At 15, Soup Perkins and Alonzo Clayton share distinction of being the youngest jockeys to win the Kentucky Derby.

I've got my fingers crossed that we'll find 30 soon.

I can't enter one myself, as I'm hosting, but I don't mind posting a couple of my own here. I hope rather than steal someone's idea, I inspire more entries:

Jimmy Thackery's rig. I like blue(s):

I hope the entries will fill up today and tomorrow - sometimes putting the call out in the Lounge brings in new participants.

Thanks even more for the advice. I'll feel something of a failure if I can't find close to 30 photographers who find interest in the theme.

That last pic of Jimmy Thackery was so long ago I took it with my first digital camera, a 3MP Coolpix. I always liked it though.

(as an observer and participant for now 4 + years)
I can say the change of contests not filling up or so strugglingly filling up started after when we had what I think was at least a 6 months break and could not hold the contests after the switch to DU3.

Then the ability to poll came back finally, and with it the unexpected loss of secret balloting.
A number of (one valuable old timer for sure) participants never came back because of the loss of privacy in something that is so competitive among friends.

So, trust me, it is not personal. It is that our contests have lost some of their appeal by being somewhat trivialized and our needs were not, IMO as all who have heard me complain know, sufficiently valued and respected.

I wish we had the ability to do secret polling. It doesn't really bother me that much, but I do understand why it bothers some people and it would be preferable for the contests.

The whole switchover to the new DU3 caused the loss of some old timers.

But, we gained some great new folks as well. We just generally don't seem to fill the contests.

On another note, has anyone missed the winter contest? In all honestly our winter was very mild so I probably would not have entered. But I think our autumn winner has forgotten, LOL. Three monthis takes a long memory....................

who is in charge (who won) and when is it supposed to happen? NOW!?

Nick Danger and Blueraven were so wonderful and reliable and just did them for a long time until they understandably got overwhelmed.
We have to take over and maybe make a roster and pin it?

BTW:
I have after all my fussing not stopped submitting (because I can't help myself, it's so much fun) but I have not been able to bring myself to vote.
I think it is hard enough to make a choice, and I like my privacy when I do it.

All I had to submit were some street scenese from Beale Street though. One was a little artistic brush with some Lightroom adjustment. I had some ideas about interpreting the theme, but they would have required a lot of setup and time that I didn't have this month. But I really am enjoying all you guys photos!
