1. This is one fascinating photo! My only question: What is it? Some insect, I guess.

I assume that the creature on the left is emerging from the stuff on the right.

I was hesitant to post in this forum after seeing so many excellent photos.

It's a cicada and there were a lot of them here in 2017. I was lucky to catch this one during its transformation. They're called "jarflies" or "17 year locusts" in this area.

3. Fully emerged...

8. Luck let me spot it and the critter took enough time for me to get my camera.

The time from the first shot I made, which was blurry and rushed, until the last shot above was just about 4 minutes. Edit: I keep screwing up the time. It was about 2 hours.

Is that a dog day cicada or one of the periodical broods?

10. I'm not sure. The ones we typically see are much darker green.

There were a great many of these appearing in a short amount of time, so my guess is some type that spends a long time in the ground. I've lived here for over 40 years and don't recall a big batch of light green ones before 2017. (Doesn't mean there weren't any; I may have just missed them before).
