Mine is Since I've Been Loving You... Love the barely audible, squeeky kick drum pedal!

(9,669 posts)That cover picture of LZ III though reminds me how underrated that was. Tangerine pops into my head first from that one. There was another I can't remember the name of on that. In Am. I'd say their first five albums were my favourites.
Of course, about mid 70's I went over to the dark side and started embracing traditional Irish tunes, mostly fiddle, been there ever since. My friends of that time thought I'd been taken in by a cult. And maybe I had.
Again though, impossible question.
No cult. Music takes where it takes you. Once upon a time I was a metal dude. Discovered something that moved me more. More power to ya!

(9,669 posts)I'll be heading down to our local indie record store today to see what I can fill in to my collection. I've probably still got those old LP's, but they'd be in awful shape - you know, used for all kinds of things back then.
And to fine tune my above list of the first 5 albums, I'd reluctantly pick LZ 4. I'll never forget the first time I heard it.
BTW, good post! Brings back memories.

(14,984 posts)But if I was very, very, very hard-pressed to limit it to five, I *might* choose thusly, alphabetically:
How Many More Times
Kashmir
Rock & Roll
Ten Years Gone
When The Levee Breaks
If I had to pick just ONE, I'd probably do so... and then change my mind amongst a dozen or 15 others and still be uncomfortable with my answer.

(33,643 posts)You can see him hitting his effects pedal MULTIPLE times throughout the song (hint, he looks down and uses his left foot when changing settings) ... and this action accompanies every drastic change in what's 'coming from his mouth'.
I mean, yeah, he's the 'instigator' of the sounds, but those sounds you as a listener are hearing ... are FAR from the sounds he's actually making.
At one point he reaches down (near the end) and twists a knob on an effects pedal, adjusting the timing on the delay.
I guarantee it.
I mean, it's still cool, but don't be fooled thinking he's going all Bobby McFarrin * 1000 here.

I'd have an easier time picking the handful of Zep tunes I don't much like, such as (Hats Off To) Harper, The Crunge, Tea for One, Candy Store Rock, Sick Again, Carouselambra (would've been okay at 1/2 the length), and (depending on the day) Hot Dog.
Pretty much every other song of theirs, I at least 'like a lot', and MANY of them are incredibly near and dear.
I really love a lot of the less-overplayed tunes like In the Light, Ten Years Gone, Night Flight, The Rover, Bring It On Home, Gallows Pole, Tangerine, For Your Life, Southbound Saurez (though many don't like that one, I rather do), I'm Gonna Crawl, and especially Bron-y-aur Stomp!

(33,643 posts)I kinda wish it was a LITTLE better produced ... but I suppose its lo-fi nature adds to the charm ... when I listen I imagine they'd all 4 gathered at the foot of the staircase at Headley Grange, where Bonzo's kit had been set up to use the natural acoustics when recording his drum bit for 'When The Levee Breaks' ... and gleefully did a quick knock-off of a silly song they'd come up with, using like 3 mikes, total.

(7,020 posts)Zeppelin was great live, but also incredible in the studio. Jimmy Page is a master producer, very innovative.
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)Given that a big part of what elevates that 'live' version of the song to such heights (the killer guitar jam ... which takes place during Jonesy's strange little masked fantasy vignette in the film) ... was actually added by Page in the studio after-the-fact
Page is a genius of writing, producing, AND guitar-playing.

Love the other two as well ...
But Robert's lyrical ode to his 'Companion', a 'Blue-Eyed Merle' (i.e. his Dog) in the form of Bron-Y-Aur Stomp is absolutely friggin' sublime. Bonzo's textbook back-beat technique, and Page's mastery on the acoustic ... put that one over the top completely in my book.
The last two minutes of the Stomp are way up there in my favorite Zep stretches ... Robert's delivery on the line 'you're the finest dog I knew ... so fine!' and 'we'll still go walking down country lanes, i'm singin' the same ol' song, hear me call your name' ... and Jimmy's acoustic jam ...
It's just ... so fine ...

(33,643 posts)It's not as bad as coming up with 1 favorite from the Beatles, the Stones, or Yes, for example (though in the Yes case I'd probably go 'The Gates of Delirium') ...
But a 'definitive Top 10 Zep songs' ... now THAT ... would be brutal ...

(33,643 posts)at 'multi-part songs') ...
If it *must* be one proper song, then I have to go with Dogs.
If I can stretch the definition, I might have to go with Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V) and (Parts VI-IX).
Allow me to add ... I think that Shine On (VI-IX), funnily enough ... is the greatest sex music ever.

It was purely a whim and I cant believe how good Led Zeppelin is/was.
"Since I've Been Loving You" live is amazing and is probabaly up there, and Travelling Riverside Blues also threw me for a loop. I honestly don't think I could whittle it down to an absolute favorite. Just too many great ones, one right after the other.
Off to Des Moines.
And thanks for the reminder! Been meaning to get the sessions like forever.
