It's not a bad song when you hear it with just paul on the piano ... certainly a LOT less bad.

I don't get hatin' on Hey Jude though ... it's too long should be like 2.5 mins shorter easily but it's not a bad song. Overplayed as hell though ...

tunes as well. I literally love ALL of Abbey Road, every song, and Paul is responsible for many of them ... well, Ringo's tune ain't my favorite but its still catchy. I adore Oh! Darling & Golden Slumbers. Awesome vocals. You Never Give Me Your Money is pretty great too. Silver Hammer is a fun track ... THat's just one album.

But yeah, my LEAST favorite are almost all Paul songs for sure, and they're the sappy ones just like you

The dirty version of Revolution is definitely top 20 for me, as are And Your Bird Can Sing, Across the Universe, I am the Walrus, Dear Prudence, Don't Let Me Down, and Ballad of John and Yoko, Dig A Pony ... to name a few ...

When it was released, I wore it out. It is still one of my single favorite, listen to any time albums of any genre.

And Your Bird Can Sing....killer riff (and it is two guitarists - George and Paul - though many have tried to play it using all harmony doubled notes!)....and everything else you said!

It's great if you're a fan. He was a true renaissance man ...

And basically John and Paul seemed to only include his very best tracks, so ... that helped his legacy I think. A number of George's songs would make my top 25 Beatles for sure ... but he didn't have that many songs on their records, so ...

For sure his contributions on Abbey Road are friggin' ALL TIME GREAT. Something and Here Comes the Sun ... you can't EVEN fck with that, man. It doesn't get better ... Gently Weeps and Taxman are also major faves of mine.

Myself, if I picked my top 50 it'd actually probably be about equal ratios of the songs that each wrote (95% of the time the singer is the predominant writer of the song, even though they say Lennon/McCartney) between the three.

But my top 15 would favor Lennon more strongly for sure. I just found him more interesting as a songwriter though Paul was, in the end, probably 'better at it'.

I think the whole of Abbey Road is their masterpiece (though Revolver and Sgt Peppers are more impressive in their inventiveness at the time they came out), but all of side 2 in particular ... following Here Comes The Sun I consider the entire rest of the side a 'medley' there (well, not her majesty but the rest), though there's just a very brief gap somewhere in there ... what a way to end a career like theirs man ... talk about going out in STYLE, sheeeeeit.

Also ... allow me to add a lot of the early songs, ESP. the rockers songs like Day Tripper, Paperback Writer ... and even some of the ones you'd THINK would be better in Stereo like Rain ... are actually FAR better in their Mono mixes ... I have all the 2009 remasters in both versions ... it really wasn't 'til Revolver that ANY of the songs are truly superior in Stereo ... and even after that it's hit and miss (until LiB and AR at least) depending on the song and mix. It almost is like listening to 2 completely different songs, esp. on headphones, in many cases.

IMHO, it was Magical Mystery Tour (1967) that for the first time, most of the songs are clearly better in stereo ... I Am The Walrus RULES in Stereo, as does Baby You're A Rich Man. Penny Lane is very slightly better in Stereo but really sounds QUITE close to Mono mix. Hello Goodbye & the Title Track I slightly prefer the Mono ...

And Strawberry Fields & All You Need Is Love are interesting because my opinion varies seemingly 'depending on the day' ... Bottom line, I think both versions of each definitely have their charms ... Stereo's better if you're baked though, no question. These two songs are STRIKINGLY different in their versions, though

TTBOMK Let It Be and Abbey Road were the only 100% 'meant to be heard in stereo' records in their catalog, i.e. recorded with the express intent of being 'stereo recordings' and hence ttbomk are only available stereo. You can TELL, too.

Esp. Walrus. That song fcking RULES.

Lady Madonna is at least 'okay', it wouldn't make my top 100 Beatles songs but it's not BAD, imho.

Eleanor is a classic ... hell, it's on Revolver ... and nothing about Revolver sucks.

Well, EXCEPT the BLIGHT that is Yellow Submarine, which leads me to my next point ...

MY LEAST FAVORITE: Yellow Submarine. ESP. cause it's on Revolver.

It's just WRONG on every level.

Maxwell's silver hammer

WTF was that nonsense? Boring and pretentious - Yeah it was that, but most British artists were by then.

That Maxwell's silver hammer song was extra special though. It felt like the Beatles were just trying to see how much dreck they could force the radio stations to play

You probably know the title track it was pretty popular at the time ... but this was a top to bottom brilliant record that is SOOOOO beautifully Beatles influenced ... Matthew with flawless songcraft (along with ALL vocals save a little help on one song, rhythm guitar, bass and some drums too) ... and NYC guitar ROYALTY (Richard Lloyd of Television, Robert Quine from Richard Hell & the Voidoids, Greg Leisz a steel guitar MASTER) peeling the paint off the walls behind him ... Guest spots by Indigo Girls and Lloyd Cole complete the awesomeness.

Put on your headphones ... crank it up and take a 50 min break ... you can thank me later

Oh, and by all means ... smoke 'em if you got 'em

Trust me, you will sit there and go ... is there going to be just ONE song that isn't fcking awesome here? Naawww. There's really not.

'Awful' I believe it objectively is not. At least insofar as music can be objectively rated ..

You may not care for it ... no music is going to be to everyone's taste. One does need to have to have a taste for 'guitar squall' to enjoy it, no doubt. Believe it or not though, if you just listen a few times you'll find it's as hook-filled as just about any record ever made.

On Edit: Basically if you can dig the below song & video, then you can dig Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend album (which was 2 albums before 100% Fun, the one that contains Sick of Myself).

The Girlfriend record though doesn't actually have a song that rocks AS hard as Sick of Myself ... but most people have heard this song from 100% Fun, which is ALSO a freaking brilliant album ... and it IS his absolutely MOST hard-rocking tune so if you can handle this level of rockitude ... you can hang with any of his stuff.

If you don't like the opener Divine Intervention on Girlfriend (which, I personally love but I could see in that one case, not digging it that much and it's unfortunately perhaps ... the opener ... even though it is perhaps the least great song on it) ... I urge you to at LEAST listen to the section of 'Looking at the Sun' through 'Thought I Knew You' ... And then check out, I Wanted To Tell You, Don't Go and Your Sweet Voice (which closed out the vinyl copy, hence the click track at the end ... songs 13-15 were cd bonus tracks).

I love that there's literally NOTHING but Bass, Drums, Guitar (including Steel), Vocals (all by Matthew) on this entire album. No Horns, No Keys, No Strings (that aren't on a guitar) ... I really think John would've loved it as well.

Lastly ... I proffer you this ...

I may not be familiar with the worst songs, as they might not get played as much.

But of those I know, possibly 'The Ballad of John and Yoko' (a bit pretentious to have a ballad about *yourself*?); 'All You Need is Love' (sorry, I know it's many people's favourite, but maybe I've just heard it too often); and 'Birthday' (not sure if it's the song, or just that I'm a birthday-phobic!)

I mean the name is kinda dumb but I adore that song. And it's in no way a 'Ballad' so I think it was meant a little tongue in cheek. That said, it's also probably the most 'autobiographical' song in their catalog ... followed by Two of Us from Let it Be ...

Plus ... I dig that it sounds more like a Grateful Dead song from that era ... than a Beatles song.

Sometimes I wonder if people just hate on it cause the name ... esp cause of HER name lol ... like I wonder if they even recall the song itself very well if at all.

It was the very last Beatles song to hit #1 in the U.K., btw ...

...all their tracks. They really had a high quality... even the ones people say they don't like were, at least, interesting to hear on an album - they tried different stuff and grew, instead of just doing 10 inferior versions of their latest hit and selling it as an album.
