Randy Bachman hosted a show every Saturday night on CBC radio, often giving background stories on his songs. From memory, this is a rough telling of his story of how "No Sugar Tonight" was born.

Randy was living in Winnipeg, Manitoba in the 60's - a tough, very conservative town then. He was walking down the street one day, with long hair and tie dyed shirt, and four punks were walking towards him. By the looks they were giving each other, he knew it wasn't going to be a good encounter when they met. Just before they reached each other, a car roared up, the pack leader's girlfriend jumped out and started screaming at him to get in the car, he was late for their date. He got in the car looking rather sheepish and the other three kind of slunk off. Through the open window of the car as it drove off, Randy heard the girlfriend yell "And furthermore, you ain't gettin no sugar tonight".

Randy went home and wrote that song in 15 minutes.
