McCoy Tyner has passed

I am not a huge Jazz fan, as I've said here before - But I have friends who are and when they played this guy I sat up and noticed.

A giant talent. So big and bright even my ignorance couldn't obscure him. RIP Mr. Tyner

I got to see him live a few times. He was a real titan.

Here he is with his quartet (Azar Lawrence on tenor saxophone, Joony Booth on bass, and Alphonse Mouzon on drums) at the 1973 Montreux Jazz Festival:

And here's another of my favorite compositions of McCoy's, the wonderful "Song of the New World" with a big band:

And lastly, with the classic John Coltrane Quartet (with Elvin Jones, drums, and Jimmy Garrison, bass) playing an intense version of "My Favorite Things ":

RIP.
