Wilko and Billy Bragg were asked by Woodie's daughter to put music to a box load of old lyrics/poems her father had written but never made into songs.

In my opinion, the two Mermaid Avenue albums that resulted were some of the best work either Wilko or Bragg had ever done.

The title Mermaid Avenue comes from the street in Coney Island, Brooklyn where Woodie moved too after he was black listed. He moved there because the only people brave enough to give him work was the Merchant Seamen Union.

Interesting stuff, great lyrics and music.
