(24,324 posts)I played jazz (drummer) all over the NYC tri-state area, even as a high-schooler in the 1950's then in summers in the 1960s during college...
Was able to hear all those be-bop greats in the city and north Jersey...
Listened to Symphony Sid all the time in the 1950s...
I can remember driving home 5 nights a week from a quartet gig at the SEAWAY IDLEWILD HOTEL at the then Idlewild Airport to Teaneck in the 1960s at 2 in the morning after a 4 hour gig.... whomever the DJ was, I forget.. THIS always came on some time on the way home.:> )
Then up at 6 for 10 hours of mowing lawns,6 days a week then hop in the car and back to "JFK."
All summer...

came of age in the 1960s, really...
went to JFK's funeral
was living/working in Memphis when MLK was killed
my sister was in LA when Bobby was killed
weird vibe about all that...
Played Shostakovich and Beethoven at the age of 16 and am still doing it....
