On this day in 1977 Jimmy Carter pardoned draft resisters who were arrested or wanted for crimes relating to resisting the Vietnam War draft.
Not everyone had the money to buy their way out with a college or medical deferment. Many sought exile in Canada where they remained until Carter's pardon rejoined families separated by deep moral convictions.
