all-star extravaganzas. The conventional wisdom in Hollywood's early days was to only put one or two stars in a picture, to limit costs and increase profits. Grand Hotel (1932) was one of the first all-star films, with five of MGM's biggest stars of the time, and it went on to be the second highest grossing picture of that year.
