Stowe's programming picks cover a wide range of genres. She chooses the wartime comedy The More the Merrier (1943) because George Stevens is a favorite director and leading lady Jean Arthur is "one of the greatest comediennes." The romantic drama Splendor in the Grass (1961), directed by Elia Kazan, is "a magnificent movie, heartwarming and complex," featuring "extraordinary" performances from Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty. The Italian neorealist film The Bicycle Thief (1948) is "as strong as they come," yet portrays "an inherent optimism in the human spirit." Stowe finds I Confess (1953) "atypical" of director Alfred Hitchcock, with its "constant mounting tension" in the story of a priest (Montgomery Clift) facing a moral crisis.

I've always thought Splendor In The Grass (10PM) was an under-rated film. I think it's really well done.

Notice how the teenagers are able to converse normally among themselves but find they are tongue-tied with the adults.

This is most noticeable with the Warren Beatty character. With the doctor and his own father he has difficulty forming even a coherent sentence.

Wonderful directing by Elia Kazan.
