"Holiday" is a favourite of mine - I think it's slipped a bit under the radar these days, because it's never mentioned when people talk or write about the great films of Cary Grant or Katharine Hepburn. I have it on DVD and pull it out every so often to enjoy again. Grant still had a bit of the "rogue and vagabond" about him at this time. before he became Mr Super-suave, and I rather like that persona. And he and Hepburn always played well together.

And of course, The Barretts of Wimpole Street - although I always enjoy both Norma Shearer and Fredric March, this is Charles Laughton's film. It's not so much in what he says as what he doesn't say. He conveys so much in a subtle but unmistakable way. He was so good!

And all power to Donald Ogden Stewart for giving them the vehicles to play in.

I hadn't thought to consider that Holiday is a neglected gem, especially since it shows up on TCM regularly, but I do have to agree with you.

On top of that, it doesn't fit into any tidy little categories. As a comedy, it's likely eclipsed by a lot of the other work Cary Grant did, and as a Grant-Hepburn pairing, it's simply not as well-known as The Philadelphia Story and Bringing Up Baby.

It's a Christmas-New Year movie yet not a household name to people who would drop everything to watch Christmas in Connecticut or The Bishop's Wife.

On top of that, there's air of melancholy and longing underneath the frivolity of the dialogue. I'm not sure I picked up on that when I was 19 or 20 years old and first saw the movie, but it certainly resonates now.

As for Donald Ogden Stewart, out of curiosity I looked up a list of his credits. Uh, how did I not realize he'd done all these screenplays?! What a stellar list!

And I pay tribute to him as a man who wasn't afraid to proclaim his convictions, even when it would endanger his livelihood.

And he was such a mild-looking man - you'd think he was probably a bank clerk.
