Rock Scully, the Grateful Dead’s first manager, dies at 73
Rock Scully, the original manager of the Grateful Dead, who helped navigate the maverick San Francisco band through the wild and woolly period between 1965 and 1985, died Tuesday in his hometown of Monterey. He was 73.
The cause was lung cancer, said Dennis McNally, a friend and historian of the Grateful Dead.
As a grad school dropout who had been promoting concerts for the Family Dog, Mr. Scully first encountered the band at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco in December 1965, while they were still known as the Warlocks.
They didnt make a great first impression, as Mr. Scully recalled in the 1995 book he co-authored, Living With the Dead, describing the shaggy psychedelic rockers as the kind of random sample of unregenerate human types youd find in a lineup, say, or a Greyhound bus terminal.
