I could imagine staring at that as a child and going all sorts of places in that balloon.

Seriously.

My husband dropped off a case of water bottles and 12 rolls of toilet paper on the front porch of an elderly friend whose birthday it was today. The man had told my husband he was unable to find TP anywhere in the stores of Los Angeles. My husband waited in line at Costco for an hour and a half for Costco to open to get that toilet paper--they sell out right after opening. When his friend saw what my husband left on his porch he called and couldn't stop thanking him, he said he was in tears over the gift.

You’ve captured everything just perfectly! Even the joy of what’s to come! It is magical in the way only you can capture it. The more I see your work the more I see that uniquely magical quality you have. It’s whimsical and almost has a quality of candy to it. A delight for the eyes on so many levels. Your treatment of the flowing flag is just awesome (I’m using the word awesome as in filled with awe).

Just wow! You could start making cards for seasonal themes and for life’s milestones. You are getting better and better!

Technically I’m impressed with the way you outlined the balloon and the flag with dark fine lines in ink.

how much paint it eats and had trouble getting my colors as rich I wanted them. Ended up with four layers, which is why I was up until 2am. As for the ink, I’ve always been a fan of line and wash. I was going to give her the original balloon painting below, but hubby said I had to keep it since it was my first one, and because it’s the children’s book I someday hope to do if I can ever manage people and animals.

I really appreciate you taking the time to tell me what you like in my work. I’m always so caught up in self-doubt and the mistakes I see, I sometimes (literally) miss the bigger picture. LOL

Good for your husband to suggest you keep it.

As far as doing a children’s book I think you’re quite ready to do one now. If you need to paint people then set yourself the goal to learning how. Just draw and draw and paint and paint until you get it done. The fastest way to success in art is constant practice. Use the same technique you used in making the mama and baby owl. Very simple line features in a minimalist style (just draw simple eyes, noses , mouths and brows and hair). A light wash to depict race, and voilá!

All us artists suffer from indecision and doubts! Even accomplished ones. It’s vital to know the impact of our art as well as why it impacts like that. Whenever I get a real critique I always see my work through the eyes of others and I’m even surprised by it. The artist never sees everything they do in their work. The critiques are absolutely necessary, just to know what you’ve depicted!

It's what a lot of us need now, too.

I hope it lifted your heart to paint it after painting something for your friend who died earlier than you expected.
