Early Vincent Van Gogh Landscape Bought By American for 7 Million Euros

BBC News, 6/4/18, 'An early landscape painting by Vincent Van Gogh has sold for €7m (£6.2m; $8.3m) at an auction in Paris.'

Painted in 1882, Fishing Net Menders in the Dunes depicts peasant women working on the land, inspired by countryside around The Hague in the Netherlands.

It was bought by an American collector after a bidding war that pushed the price above its estimate of €3m-€5m.

The painting is the first Van Gogh to be auctioned in France for more than 20 years.

"It's fetched such a high price because there are hardly any Van Goghs on the market," said the auctioneer, Francis Briest.

"You can only find them in private collections or museums, and therefore buyers are prepared to pay over the odds for a work of this quality and importance."..more..

1. I taught my first graders about color and how it is used to express feelings.

I would make them guess how much his paintings sold for when he was alive and how much they sell for now. It was amusing to watch 25 mouths fall open and stay that way for a few moments.

3. Great for kids to learn about & also create arts. The prices for Vincent's works,

like so many things now especially cultural are exorbitant.

A few years ago I read that a basic ticket to see the play 'Hamilton' in NY was $800 & was stunned; friends said 'typical.'

In the 80s, 90s we often attended plays & theater in the city, but nothing even close to that price. It's wild!
