- Early film of French Impressionist artist Claude Monet (1840 -1926) painting outdoors, 'en plein air' in his garden at Giverny, Normandy, France in 1915. 🎨

- Oscar-Claude Monet (14 Nov. 1840 – 5 Dec. 1926) was a French painter & founder of impressionist painting who is seen as a key precursor to modernism, especially in his attempts to paint nature as he perceived it. During his long career, he was the most consistent & prolific practitioner of impressionism's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein air (outdoor) landscape painting. The term "Impressionism" is derived from the title of his painting Impression, soleil levant, exhibited in 1874 (the 'exhibition of rejects') initiated by Monet & his associates as an alternative to the Salon.

Monet was raised in Le Havre, Normandy, & became interested in the outdoors & drawing from an early age. Although his mother supported his ambitions to be a painter, his father disapproved & wanted him to pursue a career in business. His mother died in Jan. 1857 when he was 16 years old, & he was sent to live with his wealthy aunt. Monet went on to study at the Académie Suisse, & under the academic history painter Charles Gleyre, where he was a classmate of Auguste Renoir. His early works include landscapes, seascapes, & portraits, but attracted little attention. A key early influence was Eugène Boudin who introduced him to the concept of plein air painting.

- From 1883, Monet lived in Giverny, also in northern France, where he purchased a house & property and began a vast landscaping project, including a water-lily pond.. the paintings of water lilies in his garden in Giverny that occupied him continuously for the last 20 years of his life. Frequently exhibited and successful during his lifetime, Monet's fame & popularity soared in the 2nd half of the 20th cent. when he became one of the world's most famous painters & a source of inspiration for burgeoning groups of artists...https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claude_Monet

- Giverny's exhibition curator and head gardener talk about Monet's art, gardening and home in NW France.

🌻 Visit the artist's home if you appreciate art, nature & gardens - it is truly heaven on earth. The town of Giverny & Monet's estate are a short train or motorcoach ride from Paris. The tour is a half day trip you'll always remember.💐
----------
- GIVERNY is a commune in the northern French department of Eure. The village is located on the "right bank" of the river Seine at its confluence with the river Epte. It lies 80 km (50 mi) west-northwest of Paris, in the region of Normandy. It is best known as the location of Claude Monet's garden & home. Several American Impressionist artists also settled in Giverny, drawn by the landscapes, the overall atmosphere, & the presence of Monet. Other attractions include the Museum of Impressionism Giverny, dedicated to the history of impressionism & the Giverny art colony, & the Hôtel Baudy, which was the center of artistic life in Giverny's heyday. It is now a café & restaurant, with period decoration..

- MONET AT GIVERNY: Monet noticed the village of Giverny while looking out of a train window. He made up his mind to move there & rented a house & the area surrounding it. In 1890 he had enough money to buy the house & land outright & set out to create the magnificent gardens he wanted to paint..Some of his most famous paintings were of his garden in Giverny, famous for its rectangular Clos Normand, with archways of climbing plants entwined around colored shrubs, & the water garden, formed by a tributary to the Epte, with the Japanese bridge, the pond with the water lilies, the wisterias & the azaleas..https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giverny

I sold her on this trip by telling her about this garden. We'll also visit Versailles.

My plan is a full day of each garden. Then the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, L'Orangerie, and Centre Pompidou.

in the gardens and galleries. Somehow I missed the Pompidou but have seen all of these memorable sites. The spectacular Musee d'Orsay with its collection, building and setting is a must see. Giverny, a special treat and heaven on earth. Have a super trip in Sept.!
