Putting two spaces after a period: How should offenders be punished?

I find it hard to find the end of sentences with this new-fangled one-space rule so they read like run-on sentences. I also find I read this style aloud faster and run out of breath.

11. Thirty years ago you would flunk a typing class if you DIDN'T use two spaces.

Publishers prefer one now, but fortunately it is easy for conversion software to address the issue.

The one I have problem with is the trailing double-quote. By current standards, if a monologue spans paragraphs, you do not put in a trailing double-quote but DO put in a leading double on the next paragraph. I just find that too weird to wrap my head around.
