If you inhale second hand pot smoke will it cause you to flunk a drug test?

Now that pot has been decriminalized, I seem to smell it 50% of the time during walks. I'm not close enough to it to see the smoke, but I sure as heck can smell it loud and clear (and am allergic to it ). Sometimes, there is random drug testing for work - so I am just wondering...

what were your symptoms, were you tested?? Did a Dr. say you were allergic or did just your reaction to any forms of it make you aware that you were?? I'm sorry, it's just I've never heard of an allergic reaction to pot. Thanks, and sorry for asking, and sorry you are allergic.

I encountered an edible unknowingly at a dimly lit party in college as well - the offerings consisted of a greasy looking pan of brownies and cheap beer - but no one told me the brownies were "funny" -- ended up with a stomach ache and an aversion to eating brownies at parties!

I haven't researched that but remember our union rep telling us that. The org I work for also does tests, although I think there has to be cause for suspicion and I've never known anyone who had it done.

It was a concert & she did.not smoke because she was starting a new job as a doc the next week. She had been told there was random drug testing. She left the concert after two full days and nights, ran out at midnight when the smoke was.very heavy. She gave herself a test the next day. It was positive. Actually, she and her hubby both tested positive, even though they did not puff.

After too many people claimed pastry as the reason they came up hot, the federal piss test agency (SAMSHA) brought in a group of people and had them eat a dozen poppy seed pastries apiece to find a poppy seed-proof cutoff. Now it’s 300 no/ml, which is really far up there. (But don’t think you can just do heroin socially and get away with it; smack has an easy-to-detect first-order metabolite that’s unique to it.)

Particularly with Shred who chimed in first. My wife has a med pot card. I'm right there next to her while she is using every single day.

Company i work for does random testing (why they test a science worker with no hands on any knobs is a waste of money mystery to me). I've never been concerned and never hit positive.

Depends on the test but usually if it is below this many nanograms you're good to go.

I say doubtful depending on the type of test they use but I say doubtful for all of them.

Now there are things that can cause a falso positive like promethazine (typically prescribed for nasua sickness you can also find it in codeine syrup bottles.

"but.... I was at a Pink Floyd concert"

The amount that results in a positive test is so large that you could take a 3 day Road Trip with Grateful Dead fans with the windows up and still not reach the positive threshold.

Which reminds me. What did the Dead fan say when he ran out of pot?

"Man, this music sucks"

'Extreme' exposure to secondhand cannabis smoke causes mild intoxication

Secondhand exposure to cannabis smoke under "extreme conditions," such as an unventilated room or enclosed vehicle, can cause nonsmokers to feel the effects of the drug, have minor problems with memory and coordination, and in some cases test positive for the drug in a urinalysis. Those are the findings of a Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine study, reported online this month in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence.

Cannabis is the most widely used illicit drug in the world. "Many people are exposed to secondhand cannabis smoke," says lead author Evan S. Herrmann, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow in psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins. "The scenario we looked at was almost a worst-case scenario. It could happen in the real world, but it couldn't happen to someone without him or her being aware of it."

"We found positive drug effects in the first few hours, a mild sense of intoxication and mild impairment on measures of cognitive performance," says senior author Ryan Vandrey, Ph.D. , an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins. "These were relatively slight effects, but even so, some participants did not pass the equivalent of a workplace drug test."

The new research is the most comprehensive study of secondhand cannabis smoke and its effects since the 1980s, when researchers found the drug's active ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, and other cannabis byproducts could turn up in nonsmokers' bodies after an hour or more spent in extreme conditions with heavy smokers in an enclosed space. That finding needed updating, since the average potency of street cannabis has tripled since the 1980s, the Johns Hopkins researchers wrote. Additionally, many earlier studies did not look at whether the nonsmokers reported feeling the drug's effects, or whether their behavior and thinking were affected by secondhand smoke, as the new study did.

There have been numerous studies on second hand pot smoke. Rigorous tests. Like actually have 4 people in a closed car and have one person smoke 2 joints with windows up and doors closed. The other 3 were tested and are ALWAYS negative. Tests like this and many others are performed by Big time Labs.

The research is very, very clear. Second hand pot smoke does not cause a positive urinalysis.

But....... Around 65% of the positives I have dealt with all claim it was from second hand pot smoke. Sigh, that story never works. After I explain that is a medical impossibility, and describe the research, explain how many times and tests have been done on this, a whole ten minute spiel, most of them smile and admit the truth. Not all, but most.
