I've never seen an animal carry so low. Anyone know how I can upload four pictures?

(34,136 posts)Remember, possums are marsupials.
This opossum is not pregnant. She is carrying 9 infants in her pouch.

Who'd have thought there was a opossum society?

(46,715 posts)That would make sense to me. Bad news for me, however, since the racoons and possums are cutting down on my rabbit shots.

(34,136 posts)We moved the bird feeders closer to the house so the deer didn't eat all the seed and the racoons have taken over that task. If I could, I'd take the feeders down at night, but it's hard enough these days for me to get seed in them once or twice a week.
The possums scrounge for the dropped seed but they can't quite get up the posts and reach the feeders the way we have them hung.
Maybe I'll take up varmint hunting. Or get another dog once I can walk around.

(46,715 posts)They have extremely sharp teeth, though their defense mechanism is to play dead.
I should be glad they eat rats, but that would mean that they also eat baby rabbits.

(34,136 posts)Possums will eat any cat food, well any food, left outside. They are more of a problem with dogs since some dogs will try to attack them and possums can bite pretty badly. But possums will play possum - fall over and play dead. It can baffle a dog.
Our last dog would go after possums that got in the barn. He'd bark up a storm, then the possum would fall over and play dead. The dog would sniff at it, lose interest and walk off. A few minutes later, the possum would get up and waddle along, catching the dog's attention, and the dog would start back barking. Possum falls over, etc.
Sometimes, I'd get fed up and using a snow shovel, scrape up the inert possum to carry it out. The stupid thing would 'wake up' and hiss at me, but it was not sure enough of the surface to try to jump off, so I could at least get it out of the barn. If it got enough of a start, it would run off, with the dog after it.

(3,521 posts)they are, of course, North Americas only living marsupial and that makes them special. Just pretend you live in Australia! BTW, I hear they are good eatin'.

(46,715 posts)I have no idea how to get the photo to show up in the post directly. But here's a link to photobucket. If I've given you access to private information, someone please be kind and let me know. Thanks.

Then just paste the code into your post.
Wow, I can see why you asked, those baby opossums must be getting pretty old/big.
