Mine love Cereal and milk. I don't think LOVE is strong enough of a word.
I know some people are purists and don't give their dogs anything but their dog food, but mine are so cute. The dachshund sits back on her behind and her little T-Rex front paws up begging. I'm a sucker.

(29,322 posts)anything I forget to keep an eye on that they snatch.
As far as what I intend to feed them besides dog food is usually pizza bread whenever I don't feel like eating the crusts.

(9,465 posts)I looked all over for tuna-flavored dog food, but no dice. Salmon was a really poor second, but they did make that. It was a lot more attractive if I added a teaspoon of tuna, or poured the juice from a tuna can over it.

(11,361 posts)... fish, meat trimmings, most vegetables, nuts, any dairy product ...
It's a long list - they love eating.

(19,736 posts)Some are toxic for them. That and grapes. Crazy, I know, but apparently it's a big deal.
surrealAmerican
(11,361 posts)... but which nuts are problematic?
YellowRubberDuckie
(19,736 posts)...and Almonds? I'm not sure. Might Google it. We just keep them out of the nuts all together.
surrealAmerican
(11,361 posts)Peanuts and almonds are relatively safe.
Macadamia nuts are apparently dangerous, as are walnuts and their close relatives (hickory nuts, pecans, black walnuts, etc.). I could not find much about pistachios or hazelnuts. Obviously, any sizable quantity of any kind of nut ought to be avoided, but you don't need to be concerned should your dog eat an almond you've dropped.
Thanks for the heads-up.

(102,283 posts)**** Peanut butter! (one has to whisper that word and try to open the jar when she's out of the kitchen)
**** CHeese! (little girlie loves her cheddar cheese )
**** Ice Cream (known as icee cweem---shhhhhh it's a very rare treat)
Nothing like making the girl happy. But, lest you think I feed her poorly, she is on a very high quality prescription salmon/brown rice based diet for aging arthritic doggies and she loves brussel sprouts too!
But, nothing beats peanut butter for this gal.

(6,011 posts)Maybe not quite this much (and she's fortunate to have border-collie-length front legs to hold the jar, unlike this corgi!)

(22,308 posts)She (I am down to 1 at the moment) gets her dog food and milk bones and little scraps of finger food that I am eating.
She doesn't go nuts over anything. Way to deep into the routine for her to get excited about any of it.

(53,410 posts)They know the smell of baking chicken and practically go nuts knowing they're getting the liver, heart, et al as soon as we take the chicken out of the oven. They get it before we sit down to eat the chicken.

(22,845 posts)raw or cooked zucchini and yellow squash, plain low-fat yogurt, Cheerios. One likes blueberries, the other doesn't.
I probably forgot to list a few things.
They never get corn in any form because it's not good for them, and one is allergic to it.

(1,076 posts)so he doesn't get anything but puppy food and the occasional dog treat. So far he hasn't shown any real interest in people food and it would be OK with me if we kept it that way.

(16,334 posts)I want to indulge my dogs but don't for their health. My husband started putting a small treat in the lab's bowl BEFORE she eats to encourage her. I don't get that!

(9,002 posts)Damn dog eats EVERYTHINGS.
Glass, Plastic, wood, linoleum, loaf of bread, bag of chips, full can of coke, chocolate, crayons, shoes, pencils, pens, the kid's toys.
Cleaning up after the dog can be an adventure - I find myself saying, "so that's where that went," often.

We don't give it to him, of course, but if he smells it on our breath or he sees an empty can he flips.

(32,822 posts)They get a tablespoon's worth each if they're lucky, but you'd think it was prime steak the way they go nuts over it.
Or they're just happy about pissing off the cats.

(2,282 posts)Yeah I know...it's bad for them.
My first dog (beagle) lived 20 years.
My second dog (golden retriever) lived 19 1/2 years.
My third dog (basset hound) lived 14 1/2 years.
Number 4 and 5 are still going strong.
Fed all of them chicken bones, Hershey kisses and Hershey Miniature bars. Cheetos and gummi worms seem to be a big hit too.

(11,065 posts)I'm not kidding.
As far as actual food goes... he's at that age where he eats everything whether or not it's food and whether it fits in his mouth or not. "Oh, a cigarette butt! Delicious! - Yummy! I just love this crunchy rock! - Toothpaste tube! Marvelously minty fresh! - Ooooo, road kill! Perfectly seasoned in the hot sun!"... etc., etc.
I'm certain he is more enthusiastic about those "foods" that will gross me out the most... the stinker.

(12,296 posts)... I know it makes me a horrible human being but I treat them once in awhile to Hamburger Helper Cheeseburger/Macaroni or Chili (a couple spoonfuls added to their regular food for a couple nights and then freeze the rest for another time) and they go freakin' CRAZY.

(9,314 posts)It is almost impossible for me to eat any of it since Cheyenne sits and whines. Eventually, she is on my lap staring at the yogurt, whining even louder as if to say "You are not going to eat it all, are you?" I save some at the bottom, but she starts at the top licking clean the walls of the yogurt container, working her way to the bottom. After she has emptied it until it is whistling clean, she still continues to try to find another drop.

(19,736 posts)Poppin does stuff like that, but he normally gets into trouble. Lately, both dogs want to stand, balanced on my knee, watching me eat and so I'll know they're available if I would like to share. Rotten turds.
