Wow! Certainly different from the usual whodonit. It is a murder within a murder. One fictional, in a book, the other - real.
And while I kinda guessed who the murderer was in the real plot - though with no motives - the fictional murder mystery was a complete surprise.
Anthony Horowitz really does not take himself too seriously. He followed Agatha Christie style and characters - in the fictional story. In the real story he throws, without shame, examples of mysteries that he brought to TV (English) like Midsomer Mruders and Foyle's Wars.
I am no books critic, but the way he uses different styles for the fictional and the real ones - they really merged together.
If you are tired of Trump and company, of N. Korea, of the hurricanes, this is a great way to ignore the outside world, For at least several hours.

(30,773 posts)"The Parable of the Talents," by Octavia E. Butler. It is NOT taking me away from the real world. Nevertheless, everyone should read "The Parable of the Sower," followed by "The Parable of the Talents."
When I am finished, I am going back to reading some guilty pleasure books.

(17,338 posts)I bet I have it in the stacks of wonderful books lying everywhere. I will go look for it now. As for English mystery writers, I loved every book Reginald Hill wrote. Thanks for the review!

(47,544 posts)Borrowing from the library and usually selecting older books. But we were at Barnes & Noble looking for 2018 calendars, and on the reduced price table was a book titled: A Murder of Magpie by Judith Flanders. Yes, I was confused, went to reference desk and when someone brought me the "correct" book, I purchased it.
My spouse is facing a long line, too, for the e-book of Hillbilly Elegy - and this is from last year!
