(4,483 posts)more of a pleasant memory, but I'd kill for a 1950s-era Sears Kenmore washer. I bought one used for $25 in 1971, and it lasted 15 years with no problems, doing a good job. Plus you could drain the water into the sink in the basement (where all washers properly were then) and fill it with a fresh hot-water/starch and or bluing batch (because I was into starching and bluing and ironing). We got rid of it when we moved into a new house that already had a new washer and dryer in it. The old machine disappeared from the end of our driveway after only a couple of hours.
But I guess your folks want something new.

(10,749 posts)Okay, I don't have the answer for washing machines.
But I bought a mid-range Maytag dishwasher earlier this year, and I love it. It got stuff clean that I thought was stained forever. Price was right. 10-year warranty. When it comes time to look for the other appliances, I'll check Maytag first. On top of all that, I bought it from a local store. Don't I feel smug?

(131,107 posts)House we bought in '85 had one, so had been well used, and we kept it, with minor repairs, at least until house sold in 2007.

(7,911 posts)and they are both still working fine.
I have no idea how old they were before I bought them.
My daughter bought a brand new high-tech washer from Sears for well over $1000 and it went through 3 water pumps in 6 months. She finally got sick of paying to repair it and junked it. That's the consequences of paying top dollar to be a beta tester for new technology.

I think it is actually the only one.

(34,137 posts)Not sure where either was made. The Roper replaced a Kenmore in my old double wide trailer. The Kenmore lasted twenty years but it had gotten difficult to find a reliable repair person so I bought a basic Roper model. It was still going when the double wide left the property ten years ago.
I bought the Frigidaire front loader as a discounted dented model from Lowe's for this house while we were building. It's been going great. We had to get the door hinge replaced - probably was damaged when the front was dented before we bought it but it took five years to fail. At the same time we had the hinge repaired we replaced the dented front panel - total cost was less than the unit was discounted originally.
