The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsNot my day for DU Album of the Day but I'd like to put this out today - The Band "The Last Waltz"
This has to be one of the greatest concert movies & albums out there - the best of the Band along with some of the top singers of that generation performing these great hits. Levon Helm, one of the members of this legendary band, has been said to be in his final stages battling cancer so I thought we should do a thread about one of the best projects Levon Helm was involved in.
I always wanted to see Levon Helm in concert and I had tickets back in Philly a few years back when he opened for Bob Weir (or was it Phil Lesh - always mix those 2 up). Unfortunately my friend was running late and we got there at the very last song but to me it was the song I wanted to see live - The Weight. I love that song it's just a masterpiece if you ask me! I couldn't find a video of the song being done at The Last Waltz concert but I do have a copy of it from Woodstock:
Other great songs - Up on Cripple Creek

I send the greatest of vibes out to Levon Helm and hope that somehow he can pull thru. However, if these are the last of his days we can rest assure that there will always be space for Levon Helm in Heaven's rock band

(102,405 posts)I was quite late to "the Last Waltz" though i certainly knew the Band's songs throughout my youth. In fact, I never watched the film until a few years ago, but then became absolutely hooked. I watch it at least once or twice a year--usually around Thanksgiving, since that was when the performance occurred.
It is absolutely filled with some of the most timeless performances--all filmed in theatrical quality by Martin Scorsese. It is a real gift to be able to have the last performance of this great band (THE BAND), but also the incredible performers that joined him. The late great Muddy Waters, but one.
But, Levon Helm's performances are just timeless. Joe Scab (Morning Schmoe) said one of the few things I could ever agree with him on--and that is when you see Levon Helm belt out those particular songs, it would sound as appropriate to an audience 150 or more years ago, as it would to one a century from now.
Levon has lived a good productive life, but damn it is hard to see him go. Thanks, Mr. Helm.
And DUers who have never seen "the Last Waltz", I hope LynneSinn (and I) might spur you to do so.
