A still-legendary Neil Young performance of "Down By The River" from Austin City Limits

He was touring behind his "Old Ways" album. On this performance, with the International Harvesters, he did an hour of Cowpoke Neil songs. There are a lot of Neils, I listen to them all. And at the end of the show he blowtorches "Down By The River." I especially like the "Be on my side" / guitar / "Be on my side" / guitar / "Be on my side" / guitar bit near the end.

As a Neil Young fan, the 80s pretty well sucked for me. Before he came roaring back with "Rockin' In The Free World" and "Ragged Glory," we got this...a little glimmer of hope that he could still rip it up, if and when he wanted to.

When I watched the original broadcast on PBS, I was about as toasted as Neil. I was mesmerized to the point of cold chills. You had to be there, but now you can...sort of.

On PBS. It was always a treat. I don't ever see it anymore.
