(12,157 posts)We preferred it. The DJs would play the Them- Gloria and say it was the Shadows of Night (1966). Go Figure. We knew one from the other.

(12,164 posts)from Freak Out by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. That whole album is a classic, so it's hard to pick one track -- but that one probably has the broadest appeal, so I'll go with it.

I especially love Sloop John B.
It's an old folk song originally called "The John B. Sails"
The Kingston Trio did a 1956 version of it called "The Wreck of the John B"
Al Jardine was a fan of The Kingston Trio, (and folk music too), and one day he laid out the chord pattern of "The John B. Sails" and then said to Brian Wilson, "Remember this song?"
Brian Wilson replied, "I'm not a big fan of the Kingston Trio." (Brian Wilson wasn't into folk music)
But Jardine persisted...He modified the chord changes (The original is basically a 3-chord song)
Anyway, he got Brian Wilson interested enough to start working on a version of it, and the rest is history.
"Sloop John B" closes the first side of "Pet Sounds"..the only song on the album that Brian Wilson didn't write.
