(1,357 posts)It rings like a winner. But I would watch Seth sit on a couch for 30 minutes, so I am biased.
And I never watched another Star Trek after the original one, but Discovery got an amazing reception at Comic-Con last night. The audience demanded they show the trailer twice. I vote both for you as well.

(23,742 posts)Uniforms similar, ships similar, flight deck similar. Not a trekkie, but thoroughly enjoy the Star Trek series right from the first season. So will watch,
Star Trek Discovery looks a lot darker than previous series. Not sure I'm ready for that. Also hate that you have to pay to watch the series.
Episodes to be released weekly so CBS has their hook in you for 6 months Sept - Feb, 15 episodes. Commercial free that's $60.
Anyone familiar with CBS all Access, is it possible to sign up at the end of the series and all the episodes are available for viewing so you only have to pay for a month?

(4,573 posts)Orville looks to be absurdly funny. I hope the concept holds up.
And Discovery...it just looks really damn good.

(3,148 posts)I haven't laughed at a MacFarlane show since season one of Family Guy. Paul Feig did a great Sc-Fi spoof called Other Space in 2015. Highly recommend if you're a fan of Sci-Fi and comedy. It was funny as hell and built a really interesting universe. I think it reminded me of some of the best Sci-Fi shows like Red Dwarf. The only problem that "Other Space" had was it only aired on Yahoo streaming service so no one saw it. Interesting that MacFarlane's series has many of the same plot and world building that Other Space utilized.
I was really excited to see Discovery and love the cast when it was first announced. Because Bryan Fuller was originally developing the series with Kurtzman. Now with Fuller's departure, I don't look forward to Kurtzman's stewardship. The big problem I have with the show is the bulk of the show will only air on CBS All Access in the U.S. I'm not willing to pay for another streaming service for just one show. So I'll watch Discovery's debut on CBS network and buy the DVD which will probably be cheaper. Especially, since they're going to split the fifteen episode first season into two arcs. So the first season will probably go for longer than four months total.

(34,137 posts)UPN was not in our viewing area and was not carried on DirecTV so I could not see Voyager until it made it into syndication. As a result I have never been able to watch the series in order so a lot of the interpersonal side plots are lost to me and the larger local universe setup makes no sense. BBC America is running it regularly and I have tried to watch it as often as possible but some of the episodes make no sense because they rely on previous information to build the action.

(14,275 posts)I streamed Voyager on Netflix a few years ago. When it first aired I was too busy raising a little one to watch anything other than the local news.

(56,829 posts)scratch that off of my list to watch when it's new. I'll wait till it comes onto Netflix or Amazon Prime

(38,326 posts)I've got zero tolerance for television advertising and I'm not going to subscribe to CBS.
We don't have cable, satellite, or broadcast television any more. I "cut the cable" years ago, telling Comcast I pay to have garbage taken away from my house, not to have it delivered. It pissed me off that a portion of my subscription fees were supporting scum like Fox News whether I watched them or not. Plus they'd raise the rates and change the plans and then when I'd call to complain they'd offer "special" discounts, mostly that required one or two year commitments.
One of our kids is a small-to-medium budget film and television fanatic and enthusiastic Netflix subscriber who set us up with our own subscription. I'm a Luddite when it comes to television. I was happy buying video cassettes at the thrift store for a dollar and playing them on our VCR, or renting DVDs from the Redbox.
Netflix works fine on our medium speed DSL connection. I guess I don't care about "HDTV."
I loved Galaxy Quest. Maybe Orville will be worthwhile. I watch Star Trek on Netflix (I watched them when they originally aired on broadcast television too) and it will be a while before I get through them all.
Watching the new Star Trek series trailer I've got some concerns. If the writing is not better than the special effects I will not be happy. I'm not fond of the movie reboots. Good science fiction, even Star Trek style fiction, doesn't need fancy special effects; fancy special effects may in fact get in the way of good story telling, especially when producers are unwilling cut expensive special effects, even when it becomes obvious in editing they are interfering with the storytelling.

(23,742 posts)bummer Star Trek is CBS on Demand. Maybe pay for one month and binge watch. That would be worth it.

(25,183 posts)and loved it! I haven't watched any commercial TV besides sports, political talk shows, local news, and late-night talk shows (Colbert is my favorite) in quite a few years. In fact, I have an antenna, and will not pay $100+ to a cable or satellite company for commercial-laden TV.
That brings me to my next point, and that is the migration of TV shows to paid channels, I hear there's some great Game of Thrones shows out there, but as I refuse to pay for premium channels, I haven't seen any of them. Now, here comes CBS to tell people who already dump too much money on a cable subscription to pony up more money on a monthly basis.
Forget about it, I like Star Trek, but I hope this one fails, that will tell others that we're tired of having a monthly lien on our paychecks to be able to watch TV. If they can't find enough deep-pocketed sponsors to put it on truly free TV, then maybe it doesn't deserve that much of an audience.

(9,909 posts)IMHOP, can't see this lasting the season. Some penis jokes made it through. Lamer jokes survived as well. Basic plot, his ex-wife got him the Captain's job. Why? Will have to see and find out,,,,,,,,,,,,

(19,847 posts)ST-Discovery... I'd love to see it but I'm not going to subscribe. It's actually kind of ironic that a show that's part of a science fiction franchise which takes place in a time where money supposedly isn't a thing (granted, they dance around that a lot) would be run on a pay-tv channel.

(12,132 posts)but I didn't think it needed a whole new thread.
3 episodes in and I love The Orville. It's pretty much exactly what I was hoping it would be. Stupid, funny and, if they let them live long enough, they could develop some characters that you care about. Some of it is a little obvious but I think they can work that out.
But I already liked much of Seth's work anyway.
I do hope they come back to the dance-off.

(2,810 posts)I'm loving The Orville so far. First episode was kind of weak but the next two have been much more enjoyable.
