(12,132 posts)and spam is on the menu - and it's delicious. They have shave ice and poke bowls too. I was surprised, considering the neighborhood and the spam, how expensive it was though. It's an order-at-the-counter-and-they-bring-it-to-you place and it still cost almost 50 bucks for 3 of us to get dinner.
I mean, come on, they don't have to ship spam in by the container load across the Pacific - there's a store right down the street.
Rather than go there often I'll just go to the store down the street and I'll get my own Spam. Thin slices, frying pan - ain't much to it. But I might keep going for the pineapple upside-down cake. It was worth the 3 mile drive and 5-ish bucks.

(60,010 posts)inexpensive, too.
I got a Betty Crocker Cookbook as a wedding present way back in the 60's and her brownie, waffle and pineapple upside down cake are excellent recipes all these years later.....even tho they are now online, I like using the book .

(12,132 posts)My mom had that - i bet I've had almost everything in it at one time or another. My wife has one somewhere but it may be months before we find everything in the boxes from our recent move lol. I remember she got a new one 10 or 15 years ago to replace the worn out one she had before and we were sad to discover it was different. There was a chicken enchilada recipe we loved that wasn't in the new one. I think we found it online somewhere - but yeah, I totally get propping that big book up on the counter and going step by step to make delicious food.
I thought baking was one of those things that you had to be careful with? chili I can wing. I can eyeball how brown I want my hamburgers or spam patties. But baking is scary lol!
I'll give it a try though - PAUSDCake is my second favorite of all time after chocolate.

(60,010 posts)You CAN make the cake from a white cake mix, remembering that mixes usually make two pans of cakes.
Pineapple rings in a can, I use dole's cause the flavor is better than off brand ones.
tricky part of beginning baking is using the correct size pan for the dish, and learning if your oven is accurate ( we use a cheap old oven thermometer)
Good news...real hard to screw up that cake and even if you, it will still taste great.

No one else is allowed to touch it.

(18,268 posts)I got it at my wedding shower, back when women KNEW their place was in the kitchen.
The meat loaf recipe is great.
I also used to clip the Betty Crocker coupons and mail them in to get kitchen stuff. A good housewife is thrifty too!

(9,999 posts)Mystery Meat in a can, covered with some type of jellied slime. My Mother (who otherwise, was a saint) used to make me eat it. Gagged me as a child, and gags me to this day. But hey, to each his own - to those who like it - enjoy!

(12,132 posts)but you might be a little lonely in this thread.
A few years back I was at a pot-luck gathering and a lady brought in a dip made of spam and orange marmalade (and other stuff but those were the main ingredients) and had stacks of saltines to put it on and I was stunned by how much I liked it. I should try to find that recipe...

(12,132 posts)with similar ingredients but what I had was a dip/spread. Casserole dish, layer of Spam all mixed up with seasonings, layer of marmalade and served with a spoon onto plates for easy dunking your crackers.
But the salty spam and the sweet orange marmalade on saltines was really good - at least it was something neat and different from the usual green bean casserole people always bring to those things.
