Recommend a good home security system?

Car break ins have been common in my neighborhood for about 2 months now.

Last night my niece staying over didn't lock her car in our driveway. She got hit.

Now, as a first time home owner,I feel vulnerable and robbed of peace of mind for the first time.

It's time to take security seriously. Any recommendations?

Doesn't really matter what a kind as long as it barks. Easier is to make sure the parking area is well lit. Motion sensor lights are pretty inexpensive and not too difficult to install.

but around here, they'll just shoot the dog.

Unless you want to piss your neighbors off with a car alarm that starts to hoot every time the wind picks up, a camera system and motion activated light are your best bets. No, it won't stop a robbery, but it will make them get in and out fast while taking their pictures for the cops. Quite a few local criminals have been nailed by home camera systems.

Safe deposit box is the best for valuable jewelry or cash because if thieves find a locked cabinet or desk, they assume that it contains valuables and will break into it. Keep laptops, cell phones, digital cameras etc out of view and covered or hidden. Also, special jewelry you want at home can be hidden in unlikely places, like in a kitchen pantry container rather than in jewelry box on bedroom dresser.

Most thieves are primarily only looking for cash, jewelry and electronics they can quickly grab and pawn.
