Normally I don't watch the show "Great Day Houston" because it's fluff. Also most of the show seems like a on going commercial. It normally is Houston based businesses. But I really can't stand it.
Yesterday was not the normal. They were interviewing Dan Rather. I just barely remember back that long but do remember when he went from the local CBS station to national. It was a really good interview and they had with him.
You can do a google search with "great day houston Dan Rather" to find more. But here is a link to the start of the show.

Rather spoke of the assassination as being a hammer to the heart. Our last presidential election was as much a hammer to the heart as that dark day in Dallas.
I know this is the Lounge, a place for fun. But thanks for sharing this with us.

(206,016 posts)Yes, he broke the Kennedy assassination story, and when he was CBS Evening News anchor he'd only do "hard news," no "infotainment" stories for him. They don't make them like Dan Rather anymore, I'm grateful he's still around and doing what he does best.

Look where we are today without Dan Rather daring to report the news to a national audience.

(206,016 posts)It's scary as hell right now. The dismissal of someone of Dan Rather's stature was only the beginning. I used to work with CBS, wrote the descriptions for the shows that appeared in the newspapers. Dan Rather's publicist was my news contact.

No screaming or whining, just soldiering on in alternate ventures.
I would so like to sit down with him over a nice bottle of wine and rehash the past 50 years and where we are now.

(206,016 posts)Though he stood by the story told in the movie "Truth" based on his former producer Mary Mapes' book. His legacy in broadcast journalism is as venerable as they come. He knew the dangers (his "necklaced" comment for the British press), but he had to report the news because it was important. I always felt he was the best there is.

(10,419 posts)Dan Rather, a worthy successor to Uncle Walter, and the last reminder of what CBS News used to be - the gold standard of media news.
I weep for what was.

(206,016 posts)That's how I think of him, too! Dan Rather lived up to the standard set by "Uncle Walter." They really don't make them like that anymore. This country has nowhere to look for the truth, has become cynical and partisan.
