(6,907 posts)look for the dark brown outline of the triangles with lighter inside, they are uniform size and stand out from leaves
there is a pale green leaf right in the middle, she is just to the left of it
You're so right!! so impressive that you were able to find her

(6,907 posts)To camp in cades cove at great smoky Mountains national park this past weekend. We hiked to Abram's falls, which is a couple of miles by a stream down to a wager fall. Being old, I am usually the "sweeper" the last person in the group who doesn't let any kids behind them. My son and another older brother were in the front with a very skilled outdoors person as leaders, with a group of kids and parents between. Anyway, about one mile in I see a copper head about five feet from the trail next to the creek. "Hey y'all, come back and look at the copper head you all just walked right by." One of then grown ups, a friend is looking and can't see it, she is looking out at the creek and it is literally right below her , finally I just pulled her back by the shoulder because she was making me nervous. Anyway, they can be hard to see and the last thing they want to do is have to bite somebody.

(1,907 posts)I've relocated a adult and a teen from our yard. Even if they aren't in a bunch of leaves they can surprise you. I walked all around the teen and didn't notice it. It was just laying on a few leaves and dirt. I do want to get a real snake stick. Right now I only have a walking stick with a fork on the end. It doesn't work very good.

(385 posts)and I wanted to dissect it. I walked up and down searching the path for an hour and found nothing. The friend went back with me and the snake was right in the middle, next to a well described tree.
What they say about people getting bit by dead rattlers is true. That hour dead snake twisted and coiled when touched. Cut its head off and buried it but when I sliced the body open organs were still pumping. It tasted more like fish than chicken. Tanned the hide and wore the spine.

(16,386 posts)Growing up in Tennessee we had them way down deep in our back yard. Once when we were jumping in leaves I felt something wrap completely around my ankle. I looked down and panicked and kicked it right off. Why it didn't bite me I'll never know.
