Going to the dogs

The largest family tree of dogs ever assembled shows how canines evolved into more than 150 modern breeds.

In the 50s, 60s, 70s, traveling cross country through back roads and villages, I used to see what I came to call the "American Dog". Short haired, compact but lean, ears up, tail curled over back, varicolored, bigger than a terrier, smaller than a doberman. Does anyone else remember them? Wonder if they were more closely related to ancient dogs?
