Saturday night, about 10:30 pm, the night before Easter. Small northern Minnesota town, about as "Southern" as lutefisk and krumkake.
I'm pulling away from the McDonalds drive through to see four young men walking purposefully single-file toward the entry. The young man at the head of the line is defiantly holding a Confederate "rebel" flag across his shoulder, unfurled behind him. They stride into the McDonalds with the symbol of their rebellion.
I wish I'd gotten a photo. I couldn't stop laughing. Perhaps they were Civil War re-enactors, reliving the fabled Battle of the Chicken Nuggets.
Some years down the line, this will be brought up in the "remember-when-omg-dude-we-were-so-stupid-back-then" category.
Rock on, fellers. Yee-haw.

(269 posts)Wow, what a fierce mission.
My colleague was renting one side of his house to a couple who put a confederate flag on his fence. They're Canadian... not sure what the message was supposed to be.

(1,907 posts)The syndrome that causes people to think they love "America" but think "America" shouldn't actually be "America". Like the great state of Texas's previous governor Gov. good hair Perry. Who said Texas should cede from the U.S. then later runs for president.
How to confuse someone like that. Remind them this is the United States of America. So we are United Statians.
Or side note you want to piss off a Canadian? Tell them they are American also since they live in north America.

(16,869 posts)It is always surreal to see a confederate flag being flown or waved or displayed outside the south. It's just weird. Especially since, even in the south, most people have no clue that that particular flag was NEVER a flag of the CSA. That flag is a variation of the army of Tennesse's battle flag, adopted by the KKK. "The Battle of McNuggets"...lol, that's a good one.

Almost like product placement.
The song had a Main Street USA theme.
