I mean, he was a generic middle aged white male of normal capacity. You'd think that he'd have heard someone recite a phone number by now.

Fun fact: State College PA has 867 as a prefix, and in my distant college years I worked with a woman whose roommates specifically requested that number. She said that they got about five calls a day to ask if they knew that it was that number.

Of course, this was back when landlines were a thing in common use...
