No more thimble? Blame it on the cats

My friend said the end must be near. It was one thing, he said, that cats, after a 141-year absence from the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show – yes, it has Dog in its title – were allowed to tease the canines with their appearance this year, surely disrupting the place with their constant purring and meowing.

But the other shoe dropped this week when Hasbro announced that it would be dropping the thimble as one of its iconic game pieces. There is no truth to the rumor that Ivanka Trump claimed it was her favorite piece of the game, or that the thimble had offended anyone by voicing its opinion, but if you’ve got a game with the thimble, hang onto it. It will no longer be among the choices you can use on new Monopoly games although it has been a choice for the past 82 years.

By the way, the thimble was joined in the initial Monopoly game by the top hat, iron, shoe, battleship and since retired cannon.

The dog, wheelbarrow and car joined the other items as the game exploded in popularity. A cat was added in 2013 as the iron was shown the retirement door. Again, something is fishy with the cat’s involvement.

And I don't know how she came by it, it's possible it wasn't new when she got it. I should check it out and look at the pieces, though I do remember the thimble, think that was my choice when I couldn't have the dog.

Plus, they're talking about new Monopoly sets. As my family game shows, they don't exactly wear out. Though I'm guessing that, in time, those little thimbles will become collectors' items. Everybody will be hoarding Monopoly games...

Texasopoly (for the University of Texas), Aggieopoly (for A&M) and LoneStar-opoly. I think I played the last one once with a friend. The variations include have stars on the Chance cards and spurs on the Community Chest cards. I guess it was good for a history lesson.

Monopoly lends itself to pretty much anything. I know we even have a "Simpsons" Monopoly version around here somewhere.
