I end up getting a really nice helpful person on the phone. Other times, when it should be something simple and quick, I end up wanting to kill someone.

My approach is to assume that every customer expects the call to be their worst experience of the day, so I make an effort to disappoint them!

Of course, my company isn't ginormous, so our inbound menu boils down to "Residential customers press 1, Commercial customers press 2," and then customers are connected to an actual person.

Having said that, I hate calling customer service elsewhere. Years ago I called my then-electrical company to report that a transformer was sparking and making loud popping noises. It took me a full six minutes to reach a person, and the person wouldn't help me until I gave my account number. I was renting at the time, with the leasing company paying for electricity, and in any case my apartment was miles from the soon-to-explode transformer.

Ultimately I hung up in disgust (this was back when you could actually hang up on someone) and called 911 to report it. Their customer service was excellent, by the way.
