So I finally saw Gosford Park last night

I really enjoyed it, but I have two questions:

Why was this movie rated R? There were some curse words, a fairly bloodless shanking, a woman got pinned down on a bed by a man, and you see a man's butt in underwear. Sex is certainly implied in several scenes, but there's no nudity, no sensuality, and very little violence. I would have thought that a PG-13 would have sufficed, especially since any teenager who is nerdy enough to watch a film like that is probably mature enough to handle the sexual references.

Also, the characters were so hard to tell apart that I wondered if the director didn't do that intentionally. Any thoughts?

I guess it should have been pg-13. But I don't notice ratings,

The director, Robert Altman, works often with ensemble casts. I don't think he intentionally tried to make the characters indistinguishable. As I recall, it was sort of an upstairs / downstairs vibe, with a lot of characters.

If you want to see more Altman (and haven't seen these yet) I recommend Nashville, A Prairie Home Companion, Short Cuts, The Player and MASH.
