The guard is wearing a fustanella kilt, which means he's probably Greek, Turkish or Albanian. I have no idea how old the photo is or where it was taken - or what the bas-relief depicts. Anyone here know?

Looks like the classic "fallen soldier w shield" to me- Greek or Greek influenced.
