I'm responsible for bringing an apple cake to the family Christmas gathering tomorrow. It's a tradition.
The first one I made fell apart when I tried to transfer it to a platter.
The second one I made burned.
The third one is in the oven and it better work out because I'm out of apples
Am I the only one who has baking disasters of this magnitude?

(16,383 posts)I bake a lot and some of my "disasters" still taste great. Don't worry about perfection, go for taste.

(70,132 posts)usually make a lot of cookies, but feeling sick all week, and everything that could go wrong did.
this year was a year when the ganache refused to work. first batch broke, second batch is not hard enough, but i put used it anyway.
the kids favorite cookie, chinese chews, have never failed me till this year. crust part was overcooked, and the topping has baking powder which didnt rise. started to remake them, but yeah....
at least i didnt burn any and start the house on fire.
and i got 2 different cookies all prepped up and ready to go, but they are not gonna get in that oven by themselves.
maybe i will get a few baked in the morning.
and yeah, that cranberry sauce i was supposed to bring tomorrow? not happening.

(34,136 posts)The layers were very domed when she took them out of the oven and rather than cut the tops off to make them flat, she just put lots and lots of frosting between them. As time went on, the cake cracked and slowly separated into pieces until it was just a lot of cake chunks with frosting randomly distributed among them. It was like watching the continents shift - when you looked at it, it didn't seem to be moving but you'd come back a little while later and another fissure had developed and the earlier cracks were wider.
It didn't go to waste - the entire cake was eaten even though it had to be served with a large spoon and eaten with smaller ones.

(2,302 posts)It was a cake I had baked before, and my mistake was trying to remove it from the tube pan too soon. It broke into pieces, and it became obvious pretty soon that there was no going back. I realized I had better bake another cake, but my daughter insisted on saving the crumb-chunks, and snacked on them all day!

(8,791 posts)Back in the 1970s the exe and worked as live in care takers for some wealthy people in Piedmont, CA while students at Cal (UC Berkeley).
The woman was involved in various charity events and hosted a planning session for the Oakland Ballet.
Sometimes we (and some classmates) would work as servers and such for extra income at these events.
Mrs. xxxx was all concerned because she could not find a steak tartar sculpture that was a decoration that would also be eaten.
The exe thought it was meatloaf and had put it in the oven to bake. Oops.

(60,010 posts)For the first time in 40 plus years I decided to make what used to be my famous cinnamon rolls, yesterday.
used the same recipe from the same Betty Crocker cookbook of old ( GREAT brownie recipe in there)
Since there are just Mr. dixie and myself, decided to use 1/2 recipe, which is usually not a problem.
but, forgot I was doing that when it came time to add the flour to the yeast, and instead of adding and beating in batches, so that the gluten would be developed, I dumped the whole 2 cups in, then wondered why I had dough on the very dry side.
Ok...it kneaded well, but did not rise as much as it should have, but enough that I figured I had rescued it, and I might well have if I had not trusted my eyes and set the over for 325 instead of 375.
Damn that tiny cook book print!
What I pulled out of the oven was essentially a cinnamon and raisin cracker loaf.
The squirrels and birds are very happy with the cinnamon cracker lumps, tho.
And in a few minutes will try again.

I can cook very well. I don't bake.
Save yourself hours of time and energy.... buy the cake next year.

(118,696 posts)started dipping one finger after another into the batter and then linking it off each finger. So it was not technically double dipping. I told her to stop. She didn't. The bowl has a handle on it. So I picked it up and poured the cake batter over her head. Not cake was made that day.
