This morning I thought of the old green Clairol Herbal Essence. It smelled so good!
And Flex. Once when I was young, I went to a bar near my apartment after I washed my hair with Flex. A guy near me said, not in a weird or creepy way, "did you just wash your hair with Flex? It smells sooo good!"
What do you miss? (Other than a sane person as president)?

(31,534 posts)A scent that I miss is Love's Fresh Lemon cologne. I loved that stuff.

(2,064 posts)and smell is your sense most closely tied to memory, IIRC.
Some great memories, in this case...

(1,213 posts)I think it had wheat germ oil in it. I saw Prell for the first time in a long while the other day-but not sure I missed it.

(34,138 posts)I lived in an old dorm with communal bathrooms at the intersection of three wings. Any time someone used Herbal Essence I could not walk down the hallway and had to open the windows of my room. I'd start sneezing and sneeze until my nose bled. The only way I could get out of my dorm contract was to drop out of college until it ran out. Then I started back and lived off campus with roommates that didn't use smelly beauty products.
Same for every single one of those stinky shampoos. Back then it was almost impossible to find unscented products. I tried Ivory but it gave me hives so that was out. I finally had to use a hypoallergenic soap that was $5 a bar. Sometimes I used the stuff I used to wash my horses on my hair, I got so desperate to wash my hair without a reaction.
It also made me a hermit - in any crowd there was always someone who had used a stinky product that made me react. So I just avoided crowds. After most of a lifetime of being conditioned against groups of people I'm somewhat pathological about being around crowds.
Once Zyrtec was invented I could finally have a little bit of a social life but it can still be a problem.
Now I used a "clarifying" shampoo that is unscented and a brand of soap that was discontinued but that I stocked up while it was still available. If I out live that supply of soap I'll have problems again!
Thank you for reminding me of those horrible days when the stinky shampoos took over the world!

(28,127 posts)So sorry.
Most folks just think we're picky nuts - I would love for them to live with my immune system for one week.
Btw, Ivory hand soap bothers me very little.

(34,138 posts)I'd start sneezing about the time they got to the first prayer. Finally, she gave up and I spent Sunday mornings in the car reading.
I never saw an allergist until a couple of years ago. He said technically I'm not allergic to anything but have a hypersensitive nose. He told me he studied allergies because he's the same way - so he was very understanding about the problem.
He prescribed Azelastine - a nasal spray that is supposed to help with the problem. But that stuff leaves a nasty smell/taste and my mouth always tasted like trench mouth so I don't use it. I'm not surprised about that - I think sensitive noses are linked to super tasters, people who are very discerning about flavors.
Duppers
(28,127 posts)Exactly. I have that too. I can tell when a food has foul additives or when something is wrong before others can, like it's not fresh enough.
Don't get started on wines. Cannot drink most of them.

(34,138 posts)Never could develop a taste for beer or wine. When I started having accidents with the horses (though I never handled them while drinking) and had to take medications for pain and inflammation I gave up on booze. It's actually a good thing considering my familial history of alcoholism.

Like others in this thread, I adored the Love's Fresh Lemon. My mom got me a set for Christmas one year that had a spray cologne, a glittery body lotion, and dusting powder. It was divine!

(12,159 posts)It was inexpensive and did the job. One day the label changed to say, "New and Improved". The worst things you can see on a product you love. We used it once and threw it out. Couldn't stand the smell.

(10,206 posts)back when it was still made in Switzerland. The 60s concentrate incarnation was my favorite. The later (70s) gold-tops were okay too. Sucked after P&G bought the brand.

(25,568 posts)I tried Breck, Herbal Essence and even Johnson's Baby Shampoo. All left me with dry hair.
A hair dresser introduced me a conditioning shampoo by Helene Curtis, which has been discontinued. However, I'm currently very happy with L'Oreal EverCreme and I love the smell.
