3. I almost broke up REM in college (95-96)

I was driving on Clayton St in downtown Athens and saw a rare, empty parking space across from Wuxtry Records and went to swing into the space when I nearly squished a guy who had just gotten out of his car and was standing in the middle of what I thought was my empty space.

I stopped as he jumped out of the way and then eased into the spot. I said something like "holy shit, that was close." The guy gave an uneasy chuckle and then I recognized Mike Mills and added "oh shit, I almost killed an REM!" He went his way and I went to the record store where I told of my near miss.

So that's my REM story from Athens. I saw Arlo Guthrie outside the Georgia Theater once but I didn't almost hit him with my car.

Athens isn't a very big place! I saw them at a smallish club in Houston right after Murmur came out. Michael still had hair

Attended parties at Pete's House.

Had Lynda Stipe (Michael's sister) as a student in my BO-101 lab at UGA.
