(12,132 posts)My 9 year old granddaughter asked me to take her to see it.
I was so happy she was down with the Stooges I almost cried. I don't even care it's neo-stooges.
I have a new favorite grandchild.

(36,827 posts)The problem is that movies must now do well globally. That's why they do so many remakes and make new movies based on old series. They are basically catering to the European market.

I suppose big, splashy explosions are a sort of universal language.

(20,176 posts)Any more than great European films don't do well here for the most part.
It's equal or greater part that they're low-risk here. People are familiar with the IP and even if your film isn't a masterpiece, enough people are going to show up and buy a ticket that the loss-risk is non-existent. I mean look at this Stooges movie: there's no star cast, no big f/x budget, advertising has been non-existent other than word-of-mouth and it's showing on a modest number of screens. There's no way it cost more than $10M to get to the screen.
If it sells $40M in tickets globally, it's a cash-cow winner. A $40M take for a film is crap.
The bigger issue is that these familiar IP films for the most part have been terrible: they spend just enough on f/x to fill the commercial, the best jokes are in the commercial, the plot is crap and the casts are ensembles of big-name has-beens. Given a choice between the Green Lantern movie, the Green Hornet movie, the A-Team movie or an icepick in the ear...I daresay many people would choose the Trotsky.

(5,364 posts)The only 'Hollywood' stuff I watch are movies that are 20-25 years old at least ( with VERY few exceptions ) or classic stuff on TCM
75 percent of my Netflix viewing is Indie or foreign films.
Most of my friends think I'm a snob.
