pronunciation of WTF, OMG

I'm in my forties, and therefore tragically unhip. Like everyone else with an Internet connection, I see WTF and OMG all over the place. I always assumed that when spoken, the fully-qualified phrases were used: what the fuck, and oh my god. But I've heard my high school-aged kids just using the initials: double-you tee eff, and oh emm gee. Is this commonplace? Is the full pronunciation uncommon? Is it just a Northern California thing? thanks.

Very commonplace. I teach college, and my students say these all the time. 6000eliot Apr 2012 #1

"Hecka" pushed me to the edge... pronouncing "LOL" is all I need to jump.

Now I know. Now I'm trying to imagine Hunter S Thompson uttering the syllables, "double-you tee eff". I'm not having any success in envisioning this.

I hear the abbreviations spoken all the time. Just their slang du jour.

I'm just glad they still use "cool". I'd be in a world of hurt if they didn't.
