Having been a fan of Superman/Supergirl/Superboy/Krypto my whole life, going back many decades, I am wondering if I should watch this show, and what do you see in it?

In the current Supergirl series, Melissa Benoist utterly nails it, and the rest of the series effectively falls into place around her. She nails both aspects of the character, in fact.

Sure, it looked like a self-consciously CW-esque show even when it aired on CBS (they actually make a joke about this in-show), but that's a conceit of the Arrowverse, wherein the least attractive character is merely gorgeous.

If I have one reservation about Supergirl, it's that Jimmy Olsen has been reimagined in a way that defies his decades-long role. Rather than being a goofy, nerdy sidekick character, he's tall, confident, charismatic and built like a professional underwear model. And blindingly handsome, of course.

The goofy sidekick role has instead been delegated to Wynn, who I suppose falls into the "merely gorgeous" category.

Overall the show is a lot of fun and worth watching if you like the comic book genre. Supergirl is somewhat underpowered compared to the usual omnipotent & invulnerable super-archetype, but that's how Kryptonians are imagined in this iteration.

she really does a great job in the role - I loved her portrayal going back to the pilot episode where she is watching the news following her rescue of the plane and she cheers a positive report and boos a negative one.

I also agree on Jimmy Olsen - he's kind of the opposite of his image from the comics and in previous TV/movie depictions. I'm not sure how much chemistry he has with the rest of the cast, either? The sister seems to be struggling to fit into the show as well at times.

Wynn's character has grown on me as the nerdy sidekick, and he's still a good looking guy (my daughter had a tweenage crush on him before he was on Supergirl - the actor, Jeremy Jordan, is also a damn good Broadway singer.)

I absolutely cannot stand the new "dark, edgy" direction the DC movies are stuck in. If I want to watch Taxi Driver in capes, I'll just rewatch Taxi Driver.

The tone of this series is fun and much brighter than the DC standard. The characters seem to be having a good time, rather than suffering through their every breath!

I think that is where DC lost its way. Batman is not just a high-tech vigilante. Superman is not just a supplemental character to the adventures of stressed-out vigilante Batman.

I remember seeing the first Superman movie for the first time when it first came out. It was amazing. The character that I had grown up with and loved since toddlerhood was successfully realized on the big screen. He was larger than life.

Superhero movies should exist in that space. If you can't make a compelling movie about someone who has powers beyond human comprehension, then don't even bother trying. You don't know how to write compelling stories. You don't even have the storytelling abilities that pulp fiction writers in the 1930s had.

likes this show. She started watching it on CBS last year. The only thing I need to do for mom is to DVR it, because it's up against "Dancing with the Stars".
