What was your first "45"?

For someone whose album collection now exceeds 11,000 from every genre and time period, it's amazing that this is how I got started:

Followed shortly by this one:

I know this dates me, as 45's have long since departed the scene...but do you recall your first?

to make it skip when he'd sing, "I'm in love, I'm all shook up." Was not a bright child.

My first record purchases were in the 60s, but bought LP albums like The Byrds.

We had some, but I don't think I had anything to do with picking them out.

I specifically remember having Telephone Line by ELO. Well, actually, I still have it. Because of the divorce, I'm back in the same house with the same console stereo that I grew up in. (Yes, you read that right. I grew up in a console stereo.)

The first 45s in my life belonged to my mom. I listened to them over and over. But that 2nd one? That WAS one of my first 45s; she bought it for me. And that first one? It was one of my good friend and neighbor's; she had me over every Friday night to watch them on the tv; she was a huge fan.

Truly, though, my very first were these, and a few others; they came with a big picture book:

"Signs" (Five-Man Electrical Band) or "One Tin Soldier (The Legend of Billy Jack)" (Coven)--not real sure which was first, but one of those two 1971. I still have 'em (and abt. 50 more), but haven't fired up the phono turntable in years.

24. "Hey Hey What Can I Do" - Led Zeppelin
Mon Oct 3, 2016, 11:00 AM
Oct 2016

My mother would not let me buy '45s'. She felt it was a waste of money for a song that would just come and go quickly especially since I could hear it on the radio. My brother said I should buy albums because it was the best way to hear the complete concept offered by the artist.

So I just always bought full albums (cassettes, CDs and Digital too). Very very rarely have I bought a single song.

The exception of course is 'Hey Hey What Can I Do' by Led Zeppelin. It was a anomaly from a group that discouraged singles off of their albums. However it was on the B-Side of 'The Immigrant Song' from Led Zeppelin III and the only song they had released, prior to the band breaking up after John Bonham's death', that was not featured on any of their full albums.

Exceptions are always made for Led Zeppelin. I own not only the 45 record but the CD Single that was released on the 20th anniversary of the song. I realize that 'Hey Hey' was just a b-side song and I can honestly say I would have never bought that just for 'The Immigrant Song' since that song was also on LZIII.

My mom had bought me one or two, as part of a goodie package for a really bad case of the measles, and she "treated" me to "go Away, Little Girl" by Steve Lawrence, but this was my own first choice. I think "It's My Party" by Lesley Gore may have been my second. Good times.

Whereas most 1911 style 45s are single-stack with mag capacities of 7-8, Para Ordnance made a double stack version (mag capacity 14) that required a much wider grip. My hands are large and it fit like a glove with my add-on Hogue grips. Carried it in a shoulder rig with 2 spare mags on the counter-balance side.

It was my favorite .45, but I sold when I needed some cash.

Today, I'd get an STI double-stack.

I received a little record player for Christmas and it included some 78 "little Golden" records and Disney songs. One of my mom's stepbrothers threw in a couple of his 45s and this was one of them. I think the other one was

...she had a huge (for the time) collection of late 50's, early to late 60's albums and singles. Hundreds of 45's! I used to borrow her albums for a couple of years...I have her Elvis 45, for "safekeeping".

I have to look through my own small collection of 45's. My mom brought home one of those collections of former juke box records, there was a hole punched through the label on every one. Most of it was super lame, but it did have "Wooly Bully" and a not really popular Animals single. I remember buying the Beatles' "Lady Madonna", the Stones "Ruby Tuesday/Let's Spend The Night Together" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash" at Woolworth's.

I think it only got to #94 on the charts, but for some reason it was a HUGE hit in Columbus when I was growing up. My brother played drums in a band and sang lead when they played it at parties.

Last single I brought: "Walking On Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves.

Now, I don't know any of the stuff played at the gym on the pa system. But I've got the stuff from 45 years ago!
