Tobermory, Isle of Mull (Scotland)

If they handed out prizes for prettiest waterfronts, Tobermory in Scotland would arguably win every single time. The capital of Mull, it sits on the very fringes of the island, its colourful face turned wistfully towards the mainland. Seen from the water in an approaching boat, it looks almost European; like someone decided to construct a mini-Copenhagen out here in the fog-shrouded Inner Hebrides.
Around this small, sheltered bay, the rest of the island unfolds, a fairy tale world of crumbling castles, windswept heaths and tough, primeval forest. Its a world that constantly feels like its encroaching on Tobermory. With a population of only slightly over 1,000, the islands single town has the atmosphere of some distant outpost on the fringes of civilization. One into which the wild world around it constantly threatens to creep, sowing beautiful disorder.
