How old are you?
I'm 75.
And I'm younger than springtime. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!
I was promoted to Captain in the hospital but when I first opened up after many years I got a jungle shirt and put my 1st Lt. rank on it because that's what I had with my platoon. Others told me I should put my final and retired rank on, so I eventually changed it to Captain's bars.
But even today, many of my vet friends who know my story still call me 'Lieutenant" or some variation of that. Guess what my men call me at reunions.
Never saw The Chordettes but The Shirelles once played in the street around the corner from me for our local street fair.
I've seen Fogerty of CCR lots of times and once sat in the front row in a small club seeing Roger McGuinn doing his Byrds hits. And saw The Mamas & The Papas after Cass was gone and Michelle couldn't be there, so it was John and Denny with Spanky from Spanky & OUr Gang filling in for Cass and McKenzie Phillips filling in for Michelle. That was in a stadium parking lot and I stayed for both shows along with 2 or 3 dozen others.
The best oldies concert I saw was late '80s or so in Maryland with the Righteous Brothers, both the Temps and the Four Tops, Frankie Valli, Peter Noone, Gary Puckett, and much more.
And when I lived in the D.C. suburbs of Northern Virginia it was always a kick to see the Beach Boys on the National Mall annually on the Fourth before that ended.
Seeing Glenn Yarbrough play in an amphitheater on a cliff overlooking the ocean in Maryland was pretty special, as I thought he'd quit his musical career for sailing. But it was a Cystic Fibrosis benefit, and I learned he was a regular doing those.
Before Paul died, I saw Paul Revere and the Raiders once, performing by the Reflecting Pool near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial for Veterans Day. Paul and his son often did the 'Ride to the Wall' for that holiday and he cut an album with that title. Both the album and his show included classic Raiders hits plus great covers of other era hits.
It's great to see those artists still in good voice. Bobby Hatfield was not, but still did a good job on the RB hits even if he lost his high notes to his lifestyle.
Besides the retrospective stuff, I still treasure seeing the one-hit wonder 'We Five' doing "You Were on My Mind" back in the day.
I'm still put to shame by all of those here who saw the original acts. Though besides We Five I did see the Beatles and The Association.
